CompTIA Security+

HOPE PROJECT ACADEMY

COURSE DESCRIPTION

What Is Accomplished With This Certificate Program?

The objective of this course is to prepare an individual who has already grasped the foundation essentials of networks through a Security+ class or similar class that covers network fundamentals. The skills learned and hands-on labs are modeled after scenarios that exist in an Enterprise LAN Network. This course prepares the individual to obtain a LAN Technician position and to “hit the ground running” upon employment.  Students must meet the requirements of this course to qualify for Graduation.

Program Overview

The course is administered through classroom training with lectures, interspersed with Power Point presentations, handouts, using the internet, and hand-on workshops.  Students will use copper and fiber cabling, termination tools, Cisco routers and Cisco Switches.  Students are expected to complete home study assignments.  They will be tested after each chapter.

Students are required to participate in Job Readiness, Job Search and Retention Activities.

S/Sec 1 –      Network Technologies

This session covers various forms of networks used in the field and focuses on the roles that Mac and IP addresses play in network operations.

S/Sec 2 –    Understanding How Networks Functions

This session focuses on the use of data and phone cabling in a network and the method and path that data travels through networks.

S/Sec 3 –    Network Installation

This session instructs students on Network interface card configurations and troubleshooting and installation and updating of IOS of switches and routers.

S/Sec 4 –     Network Configuration of Switches

This session covers the Interface and port configuration switches related to port security on switches and troubleshooting a port security issue on a switch.

S/Sec 5 –     Advance Configuration of Switches

This session instructs students on configuring spanning tree protocol and trouble-shooting spanning trees.

S/Sec 6 –    Routers and Their Function in a Network

This session focuses on IP address scheme and IP Routing Process and Path Selections.

S/Sec 7 –    Advance Configuration of Routers

This session addresses configuring OSPF routing protocols and Subnetting networks.

S/Sec 8 –    Troubleshooting strategies

This session instructs students on the OSI Model and troubleshooting from Layer 1 through Layer 3.

S/Sec 9 –    Administration of Wireless Networks

This session focuses on defining and describing wireless standards and identifying and configuring basic wireless parameters.

S/Sec 10 –  Advance Wireless Network Concepts

These sessions instructs students on defining and describing wireless security.

S/Sec 11 –   Administration and Configuration of WAN Links

This session focuses on identifying methods to connect to WAN networks and Configuring and verifying WAN connections.

S/Sec 12 –  Methods of troubleshooting WAN connectivity issues

This session focuses on troubleshooting issues related to WAN Connectivity.

Practical Sessions  –  Lessons 1  thru 5

These labs cover configuring devices from Network Interface Card of a PC to the Default Gateway used on a Network. The combination of understanding the above networking theory and mastering the labs below equips an individual for a LAN Technician position. All the “hands-on” Lab sessions represent actual skills used on the jobs for field technicians or network engineers.

Lab 1 – Configuration of NIC and determining a faulty Network Interface Card

Lab 2 – Termination of Cat 5 cable/ Testing and troubleshooting cable

Lab 3 – Configuration of Cisco switch ports related to speed, duplex, access, trunks and VLAN

Lab 4 – Upgrading Switch IOS

Lab 5 – Basic Configuration of Cisco routers to communicate on a LAN including configuring OSPF on a router and troubleshooting a routing misconfiguration and configuring access list on a router.
